Habit and Habitat: Hippocampus is a vertically swimming fish. It has a horse-shaped head and snout.
- It is commonly called as a sea horse.
- The head is produced into a long tubular snout.
- It is covered by an exoskeleton of bony plates or rings.
- The tail is prehensile.
- The operculum is fused with the body wall posteriorly and ventrally leaving a branchial aperture gill opening.
- Pelvic and caudal fins are absent.
- Mimicry by having numerous prominent or cutaneous trailing filaments.
- The male hippocampus bears a brood pouch.
